HDPE waste containers your daily support for a clean environment
Environment
Environment is of growing importance for all of us, and the way we handle our waste nowadays is important. If we look to the communities in our country and the countries of Western Europe we may conclude that there is quite a good system for the way we handle the waste of the municipalities. However, there is still room for improvement. Recycling of waste by selective collection has been developed in many countries.
Waste containers
Waste containers (other names: waste bins; dustbins; wheely bins; refuse bins) take an important role in our environment and in particular the handling of solid waste in our communities. They have been used already for many years.
During the last 5-10 years, there has been a growing need for waste separation. Producers of waste bins have anticipated this, introducing different sizes and colours to accommodate market needs. Nowadays we see two wheel and 4 wheel bins in sizes from 60 up to 1700L, mainly made from plastic.
Requirements and standardization
Otto 1100 l domed lid, child protection
Since we are talking about long-life-parts, properties such as strength, toughness, stiffness, ESCR and UV-radiation resistance are important for the approval and lifetime of these waste bins.
In the standard EN840 part 1 until 6 all requirements are laid down as a result of the CEN (European Committee for Standardization).
It includes aspects such as measures and design, Testing facilities & Testing and Safety & Health requirements.
It covers the volume range of 80 u/i 1700 Litre bins including the two- and four-wheel types.

High Density Polyethylenes and waste bins
For many years, High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) has been used to produce waste containers. Together with our customers we have fine-tuned our grades over the years to meet all requirements and covering their full product range and colours.
Over the last two decades SABIC® HDPE M30053S, SABIC® HDPE M40060S and SABIC® HDPE M80063S have satisfied all customer requirements.
Special features
Otto: optiBIN
All major producers in Western Europe have constantly anticipated the market developments and needs. Nowadays some companies offer complete service systems (waste management) including vehicles for transportation of waste, replacement services and a range of special features as e.g.:
- Chip for electronic identification, monitoring and other labeling possibilities
- Gravity lock system
- Noise reduction (Sound proof)
- Child safety facility (4-wheel container)
- Special lid modifications (glass and paper disposal) and opening systems
- BIO – bins (e.g. Optibin)
- Rental and service
Future expectations
As time changes, also waste handling will change as we can observe via pilot trials on all kinds of improvements regarding environment and economics.
Electronic identification and weighing systems are coming, as well as other pick-up systems. Depending on communities’ situations, waste concentration in central places is being tested as part of waste handling. These changes will require new designs and standardizations.
