Abrasion Scratch resistance
Abrasive (wear) Loss of polymer material by friction
Absorption (of light) Light transmission
Abuse resistance Resistance of a polymer to physical damage by rought treatment
Additives Substances added to base materials such as plastics in small quantities during manufacturing or processing, ususally with the aim to alter properties. Examples, anti-oxidant, heatstabiliser, plasticiser, processing aid. An additive may be essential for obtaining the end product (e.g. processing aids), or it may be added to obtain certain properties in the end product (e.g. a UV-stabiliser)
Adhesion The phenomenon of two different materials being held together by physical attachment of their surfaces. Adhesion usually has a more permanent character than cling and blocking.
Amorphous Having an undifferentiated, non-crystalline structure. All liquids and glasses are amorphous, high molecular weight polymers and rubbers also lack a definite crystal structure and a well defined melting point: they are considered to be high-viscosity liquids. Macromolecules never can be made completely crystalline, but only partially: small crystalline areas exist in an amorphous structure. Slow cooling of the melt promotes crystallinity. Crystallinity also refers to the volume percentage of the crystalline phase.
Antioxidant An organic compound added to e.g. plastics, to retard deterioration caused by oxidation (ISO) (during processing).
Antistatic agent Substance that minimizes accumulation of electrostatic charges during processing or end-use of e.g. plastic sheeting
ASTM Adhesion = the state in which two surfaces are held together by interfacial forces.
