Vicat softening point An indication of the temperature at which a material just starts to soften. The Vicat softening point is the temperature at which a flat-ended needle of 1 mm2 circular or square cross-section will penetrate a thermoplastic specimen to a depth of 1 mm under a specified load, using an uniform rate of temperature rise. The Vicat softening point usually increases with density. The heat distortion temperature (HDT) is the temperature at which a standard test bar starts to bend under a certain load.
Volatiles Components of a mixture that evaporate already at normal temperatures. Evaporation can occur: during storage: in the summer the solvent (hexane) or the comonomer (C4-C8) can evaporate in a silo, causing an explosion hazard; during processing: small molecules can evaporate out of the melt.
